Using Smaller Appliances May Make You Greener!

Smaller Appliances May Decrease Electricity Costs

When I was in Germany, I was very surprised to see the family I stayed with only used a very small bar fridge. At the time I had never seen one used outside a hotel room before. Since that time, I have found in frosty climes that at times I needed no refrigerator or freezer at all in the Spring, Winter, and Fall..
Now here's a teeny fridge that also heats and may cost you hardly any electricity at all!

If you are in the USA you can even enter a giveaway to win this refrigerator!

Save Green through Fabric Upcycling!

 Fabric Upcycling More Than Quilting!

Each year tonnes of fabric are thrown into landfills. How do you reuse fabric? Do you quilt or upcycle fabrics?  Please drop a note in the comments below and share how you use fabric that would have been tossed to make a new creation.

This post is about reusing leftover pieces of material- that would have been scrapped to make something new.

Quilting

Some people say quilting originally was done with the parts of clothes left over after you cut out all the stains while others maintain it was done with scraps of new material left over from making clothes. Whereas quilting was usually done to make quilts to be used as bedding, nowadays quilting is used to make a wide variety of decorative items. In this video, a fabric artist uses leftover pieces of denim jeans along with a few other bits and pieces to create a fun fish pillow.
Have you pieced together scraps of material to create a whole new thing? Please pop a note in the comments below.

Other Fabric Upcycling

Fabric upcycling is not often done out of necessity now, but for pleasure. Here are some interesting fabric upcycles you might enjoy.

Upcycled Tartan or Plaid Feathers

The blogger who posted these has a fabulous website full of upcycling ideas. Including a video showing how these tartan feathers were created. This piece of artwork speaks to my heart, as my father told my youngest daughter that she is Metis.

Quickly Upcycle a T-Shirt into a Chunky Necklace

This fabric T- Shirt upcycling video on Craftsy looks quick and easy. It calls for a rotary cutter and mat, hmmm... do you think it could be done with a pir of scissors?

Scrap-Busting Fabric Bowl

Upcycling fabric scraps into a bowl is one of many DIY posts at Pretty Prudent Home. This project uses fabric scraps that you wrap around cord or rope, needle and thread.

Fabric Upcycling Course

Looking to improve some of your fabric upcycling skills? Craftsy has a course for that!
What's Project Upcycle all about? Here is the course description:
Project Upcycle shows you thrifting and garment construction techniques that you’ll use again and again. You need basic sewing skills — and an eagle eye for the good stuff at rummage sales — to make projects like cute cashmere shrugs from old sweaters and flirtatious wrap skirts from vintage tea towels. Celebrate your exit from the corporate world and liberate your suit jackets and dress shirts into saucy berets. With instructo Betz’s upcycling magic, your shirt cuffs become billfolds to hold the cash you save, and you’ll learn endless variations on felted totes, limited only by your imagination and your stash of old wool sweaters.
Watch each lesson in Project Upcycle on your own schedule, at your own pace, as many times as you like. If you enjoy creating unique looks that are simple, sustainable and fun, sign up for Project Upcycle:
